Well, looking beautiful has more to do with taking care of your skin and hair and less to do with hoping for a magical transformation.
And to help you out in your sojourn of beauty, we bring to you five affordable beauty and hair care tips every woman must know.
– If your skin is prone to acne, you should use an oil-free product that is non-comdogenic. Try looking for the word on the label of the product you’re planning to pick up. A non-comdogenic product is formulated in a way that it does not cause blocked pores.
– When using a hair colour for the first time, do conduct a 24 hour patch test. Apply some colour behind your ear or the inside fold of your elbow. Allow the colour to remain on the test area for 24 hours to check if your skin is not allergic to the product.
– Hassled by the idea of removing a long lasting lipstick? Try cleaning it with some sweet almond oil dabbed on a cotton ball.
– For enviable hair, massage your mane with some coconut oil. Shampoo the hair post ten minutes of the comforting massage and see how different your hair seem.
– Hate green tea? Well, your feet will love it! Try throwing in a few tea bags into a tub along with some cold water and believe us your feet with thank you for the exercise.
1. Old things must go!
This is where you should start – there’s no room for change if you don’t make it yourself. Open up your closet and take a good look at your clothes. You should ask yourself one simple question – if you were in a store right now, what items from your closet would you buy? It’s a very simple and quite efficient game you should play once in a while. If you want to stop spending hours in front of your closet, it needs to be neat and color coordinated – hoarding clothes always leads to a mess. All clothes you decide need to go shouldn’t be thrown away – donate them! That way, you’ll feel good about it.
2. Big event coming? Shop with a plan
Whether you’re getting married, or you’re simply attending a black-tie event, you’ll definitely spend a lot of time searching for the right outfit. In order to be efficient and be happy with your choice, you should go shopping with a proper hairstyle, makeup and shoes, so you can see the bigger picture. Also, don’t forget to put on some nice underwear – you don’t want to dismiss a dress that doesn’t look good on you because you haven’t paid attention to your panty line.
3. Extend the life of your cashmere
The fact of something is called cashmere shouldn’t mean much, so the first step towards a long and happy life of an item made out of cashmere is purchasing a quality item. This material can be processed in many different ways, so you could easily end up with an overpaid poor quality sweater. However, there are some indicators that can show you what are you looking at. First, you should be looking for thick knitted garments, and second, try stretching it – if it pulls back, it’s a good type of cashmere. Chances are, you’ll pay good money for any quality cashmere item, so you should take care of it, which means washing it in cold water by hand.
4. Stretch new shoes painlessly
There are different ways to avoid calluses, which can really make your day difficult. Most of those problems come from high heels, right? Up until now, I’ve tried different kinds of methods, and the most effective one includes the freezer, believe it or not. If you fill a couple of freezer bags with water, place them in your shoes, and put them into your freezer to stay overnight, you’ll be able to see a huge difference in the morning.
5. Dress it up in a couple of seconds – bow tie, clip on earrings on flats
We’d all appreciate it if the days were a bit longer, but regarding the fact that’s not about to happen, you should use all kind of trick and tips in order to dress up quickly. A nice touch is always a bow tie – you can make it work with almost anything. If you don’t have any heels near buy, you could class up your flats by placing clip on earrings on them.
6. Be smart when you buy a jacket
Purchasing jackets, coats and blazers has just one rule – it needs to fit your shoulders. If it’s too tight or too wide, leave it in the store, because this is one thing that’s very difficult to alter, even if you have a good tailor by your side.
7. The rules of showing skin
Speaking of rules, we should mentioned those regarding showing skin. It’s pretty simple – show one body part at a time. So if you’re showing your cleavage, pay attention you’re not combining that with miniskirts, and the other way around. Looking and feeling attractive shouldn’t be based on how naked you are. A little bit of mystery is always a nice touch.
8. Treat yourself like a queen
Beauty is connected with health more than you think. Taking care of your health starts with resting – no matter how many responsibilities you have during the day, you shouldn’t let them intervene with your sleep time. You’ve probably heard about something called beauty sleep, and you should know it isn’t a myth. So, invest in your beauty and health by encasing your bed with pure silk.
9. Make clothes work for you
You know how some people simply know how to wear the right clothes? There’s no mystery there, and actually, you could pull it off, too, by just thinking about what you’re wearing a little bit more. It all depends on how your body is built – you should tend to accent your features in the right way. For example, wearing V neck will make your torso look longer, and wearing nude pups will do miracles for the length of your legs. Embrace your shape and learn to love all its imperfections.
10. Having trouble with jeans?
You can’t have a fashionable clothing collection without jeans, but it can be hard balancing trendy ones with those which fit you perfectly. The first rule of buying jeans, no matter the type, is that when you’re in doubt regarding the size, you should always go with the smaller size – they’ll stretch after only two washes. If your daily outfit usually consists of jeans, having a glue gun is necessary. It’s a simple way to do your stitches and hams, it doesn’t cost much and you can decorate your denim whatever you find it suitable. When it comes to altering them, make sure you’ve washed them twice before you visit your tailor. A piece of advice – all hems of your jeans should go up to the tops of your shoes.
1. Know Your Measurements.
Shopping for clothes is not just about knowing the size within a label, it is best to know your measurements so you can by the best fit possible.
Going to a local tailor are dry cleaner that does some tailoring will provide you with the measurements needed.
For pants you need the following measurements:
- Rise (top of pant to inseam)
- For shirts you need the following measurements:
Next find out your waist size and rise in pants size. Clothes that fit well, help people look more refined. It’s a small sign that your appearance matters to you. Although, you may not find exact fits from others, you may find a suit that is very close and will not need many alterations done later.
2. Know your size in other countries
If you are not planning to limit your purchases to clothing sized according to American units of measurement, then you need to explore what your size equivalent would be in other countries. Some foreign listings will include a size chart with comparisons, but if it doesn’t ask the seller to answer specific fit questions you may have or google the equivalent. Next read the comments to see if other buyers noted when the clothing was true-to-size or ran big or small.
Unfortunately, if you are in doubt about the size order at least one size larger, because it is much easier to have a tailor take clothes in that are too big then alter clothes that arrive too small.
3. Consider Hem Space
If you are tall or a little taller that average always try to purchase clothes that have an extra inch or two in the hem areas.
If you need the pants to be taken out the extra material will make the process more easier and more cost effective.
Read the Description
When buying on eBay the key to purchasing things that you will be satisfied with is reading the description several times. Earlier I mentioned the various sizes that are sold on eBay but buyers should also pay close attend to:
The color of the garment
Patterns (they are not always visible in photos so read the fine print)
Condition (even if an item says new, find out if it has an irregular fit or defect).
Most people have no idea just how the decision to raise or lower interest rates comes about. A lot of people know that the decision is made by the Federal Reserve, but they probably aren’t aware of how the decision is made in regards to how much interest they pay on products as well as securities. The process is actually quite simple, and the decisions are made a FOMC meeting.
FOMC stands for Federal Open Market Committee. This committee is comprised of 12 people, The president of the NY Federal Reserve, 7 Board of Governors and 4 federal reserve presidents from one of the many other federal reserves in the US. The final four rotate out each year, while the Board of Governors remains static, replaced when they choose to move on. These people meet 8 times a year, their goal is to determine the financial security of the US and decide whether or not interest rates should increase.
For a number of years, the FOMC has made the determination not to raise rates. They do this by providing fed loans to banks to help them maintain their required cash on hand. Having the cash on hand provides the banks with the ability to offer loans at lower rates. When the FOMC decides to raise rates, they do so by sending securities to the banks instead of cash. Banks then have to create new loans with higher interest rates in order to generate enough cash to maintain their minimum requirements.
One downside to this system is that no matter what the FOMC decides, banks are allowed to charge whatever interest rates that they see fit. This can be frustrating for consumers, but this is why it’s so important to shop around. Different lenders will have different rates because they do have the flexibility. Some banks keep mortgage loans at the lowest interest rates, but will increase rates on credit cards and personal loans.
Regardless, the FOMC impacts the economy by ensuring that banks can provide low interest loans to increase home purchases. This allows people to pay off their debts, not go into foreclosure or move as needed. The positive impact that this has can’t be understated, but with eight meetings a year, it’s possible that the next meeting will result in higher interest rates, so now is the time to buy.

Indian hair is a very popular type of hair to buy for weaves or extensions. It replaced Chinese hair in popularity because of its thickness, body, and ability to hold a curl. Being able to style a weave with a curling iron or or straightening iron givens the wearer a great deal of flexibility. Purchasing human hair is something of an investment, so it’s a good idea to make sure you’re getting top quality for your dollar. The following are some tips that can help you choose an indian hair weave.
First of all, make sure you’re getting 100% human hair. Some companies sell a blend of human hair and synthetic or animal hair to lower the cost. The animal hair usually comes from a sheep, a horse, or a yak. It may not be obvious at first glance, but you will notice the difference in quality once it’s on your head. Synthetic hair will prevent you from being able to change the color of your weave as synthetic hair can’t be dyed.
Ask for remy, virgin hair. These two words have different meanings, but they both relate to the quality of the hair. If hair is described as “remy,” it means that the hair comes from the head of just one person, and it was taken in a single cut, with all the strands in the same direction. Non-remy hair could be hair collected from the floor of a temple or from the hair brushes of many different people. Non-remy hair will tangle more easily, and it won’t look as natural. The word “virgin” indicates that the hair has not been processed with chemicals, that is, not straightened, permed, or dyed.
Know the difference between a machine weft and a hand-tied weft. The weft is how the individual strands of hair are tied together. A machine weft is made by a machine that stitches the hair together across the top. It is thicker and bulkier than a hand-tied weft, which is sewn by hand. The machine weft is very sturdy, while the hand-tied weft tends to be more delicate. The hand-tied weft is much thinner and less noticeable than a machine weft, and it also has a longer lifespan.
There are a number of instances by which someone may want to purchase a surprise for a youngster they do not really know well. Maybe via the surprise being given to the child, you undoubtedly are generally looking to strengthen your own relationship with his or her moms and dads. The modern woman has an intrinsic relation with shopping, even online shopping. We women are too much in love with women’s fashion and shopping. A woman who does not like shopping is bound to be glanced at with contempt, almost on the verge of being declared an outcast! If you ever come across such a woman, I bet you will be asking her twice or even thrice to confirm that she is really not into shopping that much and then probably pity her. Okay, enough with the sadism: D!
We like to spend minutes and hours together browsing through the whole collections that online stores have on offer. Is it all meaningless as some people might think? No! Because as the thinking woman feels, shopping does have several positives. It helps to boost our mood whenever we feel low, thus the new age concept called ‘Retail Therapy’! We are engineered differently than men. That is the only reason why we spend so much time to understand the latest fashion for women and feel good after that, unlike them. Sitting on the couch and watching football and cricket matches will not help us feel better; instead, relaxing on the couch and engaging in some online shopping for women will definitely make sense!
You must have observed how fast the Indian online shopping scene has developed into this enormous size now? Online shopping in India is a concept that we were probably not aware of even till some years back. The boom of e-commerce has led to this whole new revolution, giving birth to online shopping sites like mushrooms in the fields. It is said that the mode of payment called “Cash on delivery” is believed to have given rise to this boom. Before ‘cash on delivery’ existed in the online shopping world, we were probably a bit too inhibited about divulging our debit and credit card information over the internet. Have your storage containers ready before you start.
I use XL Ziploc bags, which you can find at any Walmart or Target. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve sorted the kids’ clothes into beautiful little piles and I don’t have a Ziploc bag to put them in. I’m fresh out. Then that beautiful pile of sorted clothes will sit on someone’s dresser for weeks on end until I have time to go to the store for more bags.
It’s taken me years to learn this, but one trick to not having those piles is to have a stash of bags on hand. Whether you use XL Ziploc bags or stackable totes or under-the-bed Space Bags, make sure you have enough of them before you start a big Clothing Swap Project.
Be realistic about what is necessary to keep.
If you have an overabundance of clothes, be very realistic about what is actually needed. We’ve been blessed by hand-me-downs so many times since having children. If we receive a bag of clothes, I go through it carefully to see if it is in fact pieces we really need. If not, I take out the ones we don’t and pass them along to someone who can use them.
Also, go through clothes carefully at the end of the season. If your child hasn’t worn an item or if you see that she has 7 pairs of jeans (way too many!), make sure it goes in the ‘donate’ pile. There’s no need to take up premium space to store clothes that your younger child won’t wear or won’t need.
Mend items before storing them.
Buttons fall off and seams rip. You won’t believe how thrilled you’ll be if you make those repairs before storing those clothes for the next child down. Conversely, it is quite disheartening to get a bag down from the attic and the top 3 items need to be mended. If you’re like me, you just take those items out and you’re certain that you’ll “repair them later” only for them to sit on your dresser for weeks on end.
Make sure the clothes are completely dry before storing.
Last week, I opened a bag of 24-month clothes for my baby (my baby! Boo hoo.) and WOW was it not a pleasant smelling bag. Apparently there was an item that had not dried completely before I sealed up the bag. I had to send the whole bag through the wash on the steam sanitize cycle and the mildew-y smell disappeared.
I occasionally take clothes straight from the dryer and bag them up if I know they won’t be worn again that season. Apparently I did that in this case and one article wasn’t completely dry.
So lesson learned: always make sure clothes are completely dry before storing in their containers.
Have a plan about where excess clothes will go.
So what are you going to do with those clothes that you’re certain your younger child won’t wear? What are you going to do with those 4 pairs of jeans that the next child won’t need?
Have a plan in place: take them to Goodwill, send them to your neighbor for her children, or donate them to a local charity. Whatever you choose, just have a firm plan in mind.
If you don’t, you’ll have piles of clothes sitting around. Ask me how I know.
Give yourself a deadline.
If you’re doing the Great Clothing Swap at the change of seasons, give yourself a deadline. I live in North Carolina, where it’s 65 one day and 83 the next. I’m not a fan of that unpredictable weather, mainly because I have to have out 2 seasons’ worth of clothes for the 6 people in our family. That’s a lot of clothes to deal with. It’s much better if the amount of clothing choices are limited in order to keep clothing clutter at bay.
So my deadline is November 1st. All summer clothes have to be sorted, bagged, and in the attic by November 1st. If it’s 80 degrees after that date, the kids will just have to sweat in long pants and long sleeves. I’m only kidding. Sort of.
Have a specific area for when you later find out-of-season clothes.
Because you will. You will forget about those clothes stuffed in the diaper bag or the ones in the “car bag” left in the trunk, or the extras kept at Grandma’s house.
Decide now how you’ll deal with those and where you’ll put them. Maybe you need a bin on top of the dryer solely for that purpose. Maybe you need a dedicated area on your closet shelf. I personally keep a labeled Ziploc bag in each child’s closet and throw them in there when they’re found. When the bag is full, up to the attic it goes.
Parents may consider the wishes of their children when buying clothes, but they should pay particular attention to the functionality of the clothes. What else is important, you can learn below.
Tip 1: When buying children’s clothing you should use the criterion of “quality”. The sensitive children’s skin needs the best materials. By the way cotton is still the most popular material because it is the least likely it to contain harmful substances.
Tip 2: If you want to make sure that the clothes are safe for your child, you should wash them before first use, just as well as towels, linens and other home textiles. Thus, you can exclude that some residues of substances might irritate the skin of your kids. Furthermore, the smell of freshly washed clothes is great!
Tip 3: Even if you think that you know your child’s clothes size, be careful, when making this purchase. Very often parents cannot judge well and buy clothes, which then turns out that they are not the right size for their child. It would be better for you to be informed about how they can be returned and how you can get your money back. Usually clothes, bought online, could be sent back within a 2-week period.
Tip 4: If you are unsure about the size, always buy kids clothes in a slightly larger size. Even if the child cannot wear clothes now, at a later stage, these clothes will certainly be appropriate for him!
Tip 5: In principle, the kids can still express their own wishes when buying clothes. Of course, ultimately parents decide whether this or that piece of clothing to be actually bought. Some kid’s clothes however do not have the fashion appearance, but they are very functional. You have to decide what you would like for your children, but experts believe that functionality should always be in the foreground. This is the case for example with children’s waterproof clothing.
The first of my tips for making your own clothes is to experiment. Try adapting old clothes to get yourself used to sewing. When you want to create something new, you don’t have to use store-bought patterns. It’s not all that difficult to draw up your own patterns, and many tutorials include both written and photo instructions to help you. If you’re fairly new to dressmaking, start with simpler projects.
2. DRESS FORM
When you get seriously hooked on making your own clothes, it’s a good idea to invest in a dress form. These are mannequins in the form of a torso on a stand. A dress form allows you to see how your work is progressing and make any necessary adjustments (it’s so annoying to finish sewing and then realise that your dress doesn’t fit you). The best forms are adjustable so you can set it to your precise measurements.
Rushing a sewing job is likely to lead to mistakes. Before sewing your garment, it’s best to tack it together. This means sewing temporary stitches that hold the pieces together; you can then try it on to check the fit. Use large stitches so that the tacking is easy to remove. But don’t pull the tacking out until you’ve sewn the permanent stitching, or you’ll have to start all over again!
Refashioning means changing a garment into a new and different piece. It is gaining a following among sewers who love giving a garment a new life. Check out some of the many refashioning blogs to see how they turn ugly thrift store pieces into gorgeous new clothes. The beauty of refashioning is that you can make fabulous new clothes for very little, be really creative, support charities and stop clothes ending up in landfill.
5. QUALITY THREAD
It may be tempting to use a cheap thread for your sewing, but don’t try to save #money by doing this. Cheap thread is more likely to break, which means your seams will split and you’ll have to mend the seam. Pay a little more for some quality thread, and your work will last longer.
6. NEVER RUSH
You might be in a hurry to make something for a particular occasion, but rushing is likely to lead to mistakes. Take your time to get #things right when sewing a garment. Don’t try to sew when #time is short, even for a casual garment. Always start well in advance when making something for a special occasion.
If a project doesn’t work – and even the best seamstress makes mistakes – don’t give up and throw it away. You can turn it into something else! So a failed dress can become a skirt. Or you can make it into a child’s dress. A shirt can be adapted into a halter-neck top. Nothing is ever wasted.
1. Always check the label
Labels are your VIP pass into the world of clothes, answering our many garment related queries. How should I wash this jumper? What’s it even made of? Is this really 100% spandex?
The clothing label is not to be ignored. Sharing its knowledge of care instructions, it can help extend the life of your glad rags. It also reveals what the clothes are made from, which will help if you know which fabrics will last longer.
Learn how to look after fabrics and you’ll be richly rewarded with long-lasting clothes. It’s much more frugal than buying something, shrinking it and then making the same mistake throughout your entire adult life so far (oh, the shame). Here’s a handy guide to fabric care that might help to save you some pennies.
Those little clothes label symbols can be a real eye-opener too. Get to grips with clothing label hieroglyphics and save yourself a washing related disaster with your fine knowledge of laundry care.
Check the labels of your clothes to make sure you can get every penny out of them!
2. Avoid trends
You heard! I don’t want you to be trendy. I’m sick of you hipsters in your fancy clothes. Actually, let’s not be hasty. You can be trendy, but only if the trend will last at least another few years, thus making it an investment and not a splurge.
You may be tempted to buy a pair of flared, paisley trousers (apparently trendy this year) but in the long run, will you really be wearing them come next year? Or even next season? When it’s raining and the flares get all wet and the water runs up the trouser leg… ugh.
Invest in trends that are timeless and when you’re out shopping look for classic styles and cuts so you can wear them for longer without them ‘going out of fashion’. Unless of course you’re not bothered about being trendy anyway. That’s OK too because you can pretty much buy whatever you want then, as long as you make sure the fabric is up to standard.
3. Charity shops in ‘posh’ areas
We’ve spoken about looking for good quality fabrics. The thing is, sometimes those fabrics come at a price that’s not always a realistic option. Enter the charity shop. The Aladdin’s cave of clothes shops, some fabulous and some… well there’s a clear reason they’ve been discarded.
Either way, charity shops can be full of high quality clothes at cheaper prices (with the added bonus of donating to charity and all that).
If you want to go the extra mile and get something super snazzy for a wedding or special occasion check out the charity shops in ‘posh’ areas. Again, if the quality’s good you’ll be able to get lots of wear out of your new find, reducing the need to buy more clothes.
Sometimes celebs even let us normal folk wear their cast-offs too. Aren’t we lucky? I’m not complaining really, a bargain’s a bargain after all!
4. Think in outfits
Look at me, being all fancy, talking about ‘outfits’ like I know about fashion! What I mean here is, when you’re buying something new, make sure it’s actually going to match the rest of your wardrobe, so you can get plenty of use out of it.
One new item, teamed with lots of old stuff, can create a host of new outfit combinations – hopefully meaning you won’t have to buy a load of other things too. Make your clothes work hard, they need to earn that place in your wardrobe!
If this is something that confuses you or you simply don’t care much about, have a look on Pinterest at these clothes matching guides and tips. Hopefully, you’ll be able to shop less and wear more of what you do buy. Hi-fives all round.
5. Don’t fear the stain
A stain can be a terrifying thing. What is it? Why is it there? When did it happen? Did anyone see it? So many questions. Don’t let a stain ruin your day (or your wardrobe).
Spills could mean your clothes are potentially ruined by a particularly selfish and stubborn stain, leaving you with having to replace it and buy something new. Damn that typical stain-like behaviour.
Stain removal knowledge will hopefully stop you having to fork out for something new every time the jam in a doughnut falls down your top. Or bolognese sauce falls into your lap and you ignored your mum’s advice about using a napkin. Anyway, here’s a guide to removing stains. Messy eaters rejoice!
You could also have a go at making your own stain remover to save money on expensive cleaning products. Although I’d definitely suggest testing this on something old first to be absolutely sure it works.
6. Sale away
If you know you need to buy new clothes for a specific event, check out the sales to see if you can get the best bargain you can. Most UK retailers have January sales (in December), mid season sales (March and September) and around summertime there’s likely to be a sneaky end of season sale too.
Don’t forget discount codes for online shops too… it’s as though retailers don’t actually want us to buy full price anyway. Always search for discounts before you buy online!
Keep an eye out for high street sales, get to know their habits and act accordingly. Why buy something full price when there’s a chance it could be reduced in a few weeks? If you are going to buy something full price, see if you can get free delivery if you buy it online and then use a cashback site to at least get some money back. The retailers haven’t won yet!
7. Quality counts
We’ve already talked about fabrics, so now the focus is on how the garment is put together and how it fits. It’s pointless to have a wardrobe full of bad clothes that you don’t wear because they fit strangely or can’t wear because they’ve all fallen apart.
I know it’s not always realistic to pay high quality prices, especially when you’re on a budget. However, if you’re able to save something each month towards clothing, it’s important to know what to look out for when you do go shopping. This guide to spotting quality clothing highlights some of the things you can look out for whether you’re buying brand new or second hand.
It’s also handy to know what sizes to look for as clothing sizes vary between shops, for example a medium in one shop could be a small in another. This size guide will help you find what size is best suited to you in various retailers.
8. Shop in another department
This tip is more useful to females. Often when I’ve been clothes shopping, I’ve found that a similar item is actually cheaper in the male section of the shop. Very sneaky! This tends to apply to basic items, such as t-shirts, jeans, jumpers and shirts. So it’s always worth a look, especially if you’ve got time to try on your finds to compare fits.
9. A stitch in time
Again, while this is not a shopping trick as such, it’s potentially a way to stop you having to spend money on new clothes by saving old ones.
The saying ‘a stitch in time saves nine’ is not one to be ignored! Learning to fix a broken zip or sewing up a hole can obviously help your clothes last a little bit longer. It’s also a great skill to have!
Sometimes, this is a little bit easier said than done, so this post about mending or altering clothes may be of some help.
Don’t forget, there are lots of other ways you can make your clothes last longer too.
10. Know your iron
It’s 2015; we should really have crease free clothes by now. Unfortunately, though, there’s always something in the wardrobe that lets the team down and turns into a crumpled mess when it’s washed.
It’s important to know what settings to put your iron on when ironing various fabrics. Just last week I burnt a hole in one of my favourite tops because the iron was too hot and last night the same thing happened to a dress of mine. I really needed those clothes and now I have to fork out to replace them. Not very thrifty at all.
I should never have trusted that iron, or myself to be able to iron like a real adult. In the future, I’ll certainly check the settings and use this handy ironing guide to prevent ruining any more clothes.
Also, to avoid staining your clothes you should probably give your iron a clean every so often too. This will hopefully prevent the iron ‘dragging’ on fabrics.
It’s easy to make cotton clothes last longer with a little bit of care.To keep yours pristine, here arefive hints for washing cotton clothes you should know.
Cotton is a common fabric source for towels, sheets, lingerie and almost every kind of apparel. Before you wash a garment, always check the manufacturer’s care label for special instructions. If you want to absolutely prevent any shrinkage, cotton is best washed by hand. This isn’t practical for most people, so follow these general guidelines when washing cotton clothing.
1. Sort your laundry
Always wash like colors together to prevent fabric dyes from bleeding into lighter colored clothing.
Colored cotton is especially prone to shrinkage, so choose a cold-water setting.
Heavier fabrics or dark pieces, like denim, can also be washed in cold water to preserve color.
Towels and sheets are heavy and can beat up other clothing in the washing machine. These should be washed together.
2. Always pretreat stains
If possible, try to remove a stain as soon as it happens by dabbing with club soda or plain sparkling water.
Don’t rub the stain, as you may push it deeper into the fabric.
If the stain has already dried, pretreat with a stain remover solvent or scrub with a small amount of liquid detergent and water before washing. (A clean toothbrush is a handy tool to use for stain removal.)
Chlorine bleach can yellow some cotton items, particularly denim. Opt for oxygenated bleach or distilled white vinegar to brighten whites as needed.
3. Choose an appropriate temperature
Refer to the manufacturer’s care label for special instructions.
Hot water can shrink or fade many cotton fabrics, but towels and sheets should be washed in hot water to kill any bacteria.
Finely woven cottons or linens may require a more delicate wash and spin cycle.
4. Select a suitable detergent
Regular laundry detergent will suffice for the average load of cotton laundry. Unless you’re washing cotton sweaters, lingerie or other delicate fabrics, there’s no need to use a special detergent.
Badly soiled garments may require soaking.
Oxygenated bleach is a good alternative to chlorine bleach. Add an extra rinse cycle to a load when using bleach.
5. Let it thoroughly dry
With the exception of towels and sheets, dryer heat can shrink most cotton fabrics, especially if they are allowed to dry too long.
Air-dry denim, sweaters, linens and delicates.
Remove any water from sweaters by rolling in a towel and lie flat to dry.
For all other cotton apparel, tumble dry on a low to medium setting.
Remove from dryer immediately to prevent wrinkles.
If necessary, use a low heat setting to iron cotton garments.
Using extra care when you wash cotton will preserve the lifespan of your clothing. Clothes will retain their natural softness and vibrant color, without looking faded and worn.
